Kamala vs Surin vs Bang Tao for a villa holiday

Phuket's west coast has 3 villa neighbourhoods within 20 minutes of each other. Here is how they differ, and why we chose Kamala.

Most luxury villas in Phuket sit on the west coast, between Patong in the south and the airport in the north. Three neighbourhoods account for most of them: Kamala, Surin and Bang Tao. They are 10 to 20 minutes apart by car, and they feel different.

Kamala

Kamala is a long, calm bay with a village behind it, a beach road of restaurants and a few beach clubs at the northern end. The coastline south of the beach, between Kamala and Patong, is known as Millionaire's Mile: a stretch of headlands where the sea-view villas look straight west into the sunset. Kamala is where our villas are. Villa Cascade, Villa Talaefun and Villa Atsadong sit on Millionaire's Mile; Villa Chanjar, Villa Sawana and Villa Daran are inside the Andara enclave on the hillside above the bay.

Choose Kamala if you want sunset sea views, a quiet beach and Patong's restaurants within 20 minutes without living next to them.

Surin

Surin is a short, pretty beach 10 minutes north of Kamala, with a handful of good restaurants and a more polished feel. The hills behind it hold large estates, and Amanpuri sits on the headland between Surin and Kamala. Surin has fewer sea-view villa plots than Kamala, so prices for comparable houses tend to be higher.

Choose Surin if the beach itself is the priority and you are happy to drive to the villa.

Bang Tao

Bang Tao is the longest beach of the 3, 15 to 20 minutes north of Kamala, backed by the Laguna resort complex, golf courses and a growing number of restaurants and beach clubs. Most villas here are on flat land behind the beach rather than on the coast, so they are garden villas rather than sea-view villas, often with larger pools and lawns.

Choose Bang Tao for golf, a big beach and a lively dining scene, and accept that the sea will be a drive rather than a view.

The short version

Sea view and sunset: Kamala. Beach first: Surin. Golf and nightlife: Bang Tao. All 3 are 30 to 45 minutes from the airport, and from any of them the others are an easy evening out. If you are deciding between a sea-view villa on Millionaire's Mile and a resort-enclave villa above the bay, our villas page shows both side by side.
